Tool Steel S-7 OVERSIZE Flat Bar, Air-Hardening
S7 Tool Steel has very high toughness to withstand chipping and breaking and meets ASTM A681 specifications. S-7 tool steel is Oversize in dimension from .015 - .035". S7 is used where superior strength is needed to keep sharp edges, such as on large-scale Shear Cutting Machines.
Hardening S-7 Flat Bar Stock: In a control temperature oven, heat slowly to 1750°F. For smaller pieces below 2.5" cross-section width, remove from heat and allow to air-cool. For sizes over that, up to 6" in cross-width, quench in oil to 1000°F, then remove an dfinishing aircooling to 150°F. For sizes larger than 6", quench in oil to 150°F.
Tempering S-7 Flat Bar Stock: Temper your S-7 flat bar stock by reheating to 400-500°F for cold-working application, 900-1000°F for high-heat applications, to relieve the stresses caused by hardening process, and to achieve the hardness needed. The lower the temperature the s7 flat bar is reheated to, the higher the level of hardness remains. Reheat for no less than 1 hour, and up to two hours.

* All 'value length' and 'value pack' item measurements are subject to a "mill tolerance". A product may be produced several thousandths of an inch, either over or under the stated thickness, and still be within "mill tolerance". This does NOT apply to Cut To Size items. Those will be +.125", -0.00" tolerances.
