HR steel pipe, or hot rolled steel pipe, is a type of carbon steel pipe that’s made by rolling heated steel into a hollow tube.

How it’s made

  1. Start with a large rectangular block of steel called a billet
  1. Heat the billet to a temperature above its recrystallization point, usually over 1700°F
  2. Pass the billet through a series of rollers to compress it into a large roll
  3. Pass the hot roll through a piercing rod to create a hollow tube

Properties

  • Malleable: The high temperatures make the steel easier to shape and form
  • Durable and tough: Hot rolled steel is more durable and tougher than other types of steel
  • Scaly finish: The steel has a scaly finish that can be removed by grinding, pickling, or sandblasting
  • Residual stress: Hot rolled steel has residual stress, which is self-balanced but can affect the steel’s performance

Uses

  • Construction: Hot-rolled steel is often used in construction projects
  • Railroad tracks: Hot-rolled steel is often used in railroad tracks

Structural and mechanical applications: Hot-rolled steel is often used in structural and mechanical applications

* Prices subject to change without notice due to the Metals Market fluctuations.
* All ‘value length’ and ‘value pack’ item measurements are subject to a “mill tolerance”. A product may be produced several thousandths of an inch, either over or under the stated thickness, and still be within “mill tolerance”. This does NOT apply to Cut To Size items. Those will be +.125″, -0.00″ tolerances.
