Tool Steel D2 Drill Rod, Air Hardening
D-2 Drill Rod round is a non-deforming tool steel ground to a tight tolerance diameter, usually ±0.0005 in (±0.013 mm) which can be hardened by heating it, then allowing it to air-cool. Tools and dies made from D2 drill rod will have good wearing and abrasive qualities due to the high carbon and higher chromium content, which gives improved wear resistance. It is commonly used to make drill bits, taps, reamers, punches, dowel pins, and shafts.
Hardening D-2 Drill Rod: In a control temperature oven, preheated slowly to between 1450-1500°F, then brought up to a temperature of 1800-1850°F. Allow it to cool in the air. Approximate Rockwell Hardness will be 62-65. Temper by reheating to between 400-900°F.
